Reiki (pronounced "Ray-key") is a complementary health approach that originated in Japan in the late 19th century. The word "Reiki" itself is derived from two Japanese words: "Rei," meaning "universal life force" or "higher power," and "Ki," meaning "life energy." Therefore, Reiki is often described as "spiritually guided life force energy."
Here's a breakdown of what Reiki entails:
Core Concepts:
Life Force Energy: Reiki is based on the belief that a vital life force energy flows through all living things. Practitioners believe that when this energy is low, blocked, or imbalanced, it can lead to illness, stress, and emotional distress.
Energy Transfer: A Reiki practitioner acts as a channel to direct this universal life force energy to the recipient. This is typically done through light or non-touch hand placements on or above specific areas of the body.
Natural Healing: The goal of Reiki is to support the body's natural ability to heal itself by promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and restoring energy balance.
Promoting Relaxation: Reiki helps to induce a state of deep relaxation. This shift from the "fight or flight" (stress) response to the "rest and digest" response can have numerous benefits for the body and mind.
Energy Balancing: Practitioners aim to clear blockages and balance the energy centers, referred to as chakras in the body, allowing for a smoother flow of energy.
Benefits of Reiki:
People seek Reiki for a variety of reasons, and reported benefits include:
* Stress and anxiety reduction
* Deep relaxation
* Pain management
* Improved sleep
* Emotional healing
* Increased energy levels
* Enhanced sense of well-being
* Support for the body's natural healing processes
Reiki does not replace medical intervention, Please seek medical attention if you're unwell.
Eat and Hydrate: Have a light meal and drink water a few hours before your session to avoid discomfort from hunger or the need to use the restroom. Avoid heavy meals right before.
Avoid Stimulants: Avoid caffeine, excessive sugar, and alcohol 24hrs before your session commences.
Wear Comfortable Clothes: Choose loose, non-restrictive clothing so you can relax easily while lying down.
If you have any physical limitations or feel uncomfortable in any position during the session, let your practitioner know.
Arrive on Time: Arriving a few minutes early can help you settle in and feel more relaxed before starting.
During the Session:
Comfort levels: You will be laying down on a massage bed fully clothed. A blanket will be offered for comfort.
Gentle Hand Placements: The practitioner will place their hands lightly on or just above specific areas of your head, limbs, and torso. They hold each hand position for a few minutes. There is no massage or manipulation involved.
Energy Transfer: The practitioner channels "universal life force energy" through their hands to you. They may feel warmth, tingling, or other sensations, indicating the energy flow. You might feel these sensations too, or you might not feel anything noticeable. Everyone's experience is different.
Relaxation: You don't need to do anything specific. The best thing is to relax and be open to any sensations or feelings that arise. Tears, burping, coughing, or other releases can sometimes occur.
After the Session:
Hydrate : After your session, you will be offered a bottle of water. Energy work can sometimes make you feel hungry, so listen to your body and have a light, healthy snack or meal. Drinking water helps your body process any released energy.
Reflect: Take some time to think about your experience. Note any sensations, emotions, or thoughts that came up during or after the session.
By preparing yourself in these ways, you can enhance your comfort and openness to the potential benefits of your Reiki session, such as deep relaxation, stress reduction, and a sense of well-being.
Reiki session lengths can vary depending on the client's needs, and the type of session offered. However, here are some general guidelines:
Your Initial Consultation: Your first session might be slightly longer to allow time for the practitioner to understand your health history and intentions for the session. The duration for your first visit is 1hr 15.
Typical Session: Reiki sessions can vary from 30 to 60 minutes.
Your Needs: Discuss your time constraints and what you hope to achieve with your practitioner. They can often tailor the session length to your needs. It's always a good idea to clarify the expected duration of the session when booking with a Reiki practitioner.
Our typical Full Sessions last between 60 to 90 minutes. This timeframe allows for a consultation before the session, ample time for the energy work itself. We always allocate 10 minutes after the session for our clients to discuss their experiences.
Disclaimer:
Reiki is a complementary therapy and should not be considered a substitute for traditional medical or psychological treatment. It's always advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for any health concerns.
